January-February Newsletter

To all Aerospace Engineers and Enthusiasts,

The AIAA leadership team hopes that everyone has had an enjoyable winter break.

We do have a few changes to the club that have taken place since the end of last semester. Our former president, Andrew Marek, has graduated. We wish Andrew the best of luck in his future engineering career! Sam Jaeger, former vice president, has since taken over the executive operations of the club. Another leadership change is that Moubarak Jeje will be stepping down from the treasurer position. Will DeVerter will be taking over the financial accounts for the coming semester through the office of vice president & treasurer. Will is a Sophomore EMA student and is excited to take on this new role.

Shirts! If you ordered a shirt please pick them up by Friday, January 31st. You can either pick them up at the MRL Team meetings (Fridays at 2:00pm) or schedule an appointment with Sam Jaeger. If you do not pick up your t-shirt by Friday, January 31st or make other arrangements to pick up your shirt, your shirt will be sold. Just a reminder shirts cost $25 and payment is due when you pick up your shirt. You can either pay cash or venmo Will DeVerter (@WillDeVerter) with “AIAA shirt” as the memo.

The largest social event of the year, the annual AIAA Spring Trip, is right around the corner! This trip will take place over spring break and will include stops in New Orleans, Louisiana as well as Huntsville, Alabama. Tours of the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility, NASA Stennis Space Center, as well as NASA Marshall Space Flight Center will take place. If you are interested in attending, please contact Sam Jaeger as soon as possible! This will be an amazing trip, and you will be able to see how real rockets are developed and manufactured at NASA! The deadline to sign up is Friday, February 14th.

AIAA will have a booth at Engineering Expo (April 3rd and 4th). Please stay tuned for more information about how you can participate and represent AIAA! Joey Ditorrice (jditorrice@wisc.edu) will be organizing this. Please contact him if you have any questions

The MRL team will be meeting every Friday at 2:00 PM in the basement of 1410 Engineering Drive for weekly team meetings. The general design has been completed, and much of the basic analysis has also been completed. If you are not already on the team and would like to help, feel free to come to a team meeting or contact the team lead, Sam Jaeger. The largest deadline that is coming up is the Draft of Design. This is due February 1st. This will focus on structural and mechanical design of the rocket. Our next big date is the Preliminary Design Report is due March 13th. Our largest objective however,  is to test fly our rocket on April 4th or 5th at Bong (weather permitting). We are going to need maximum effort from each team member to get this rocket ready to launch by April 4th!

We hope everyone has a great start to their semester.
